FAQ's

1.  What makes Alpaca fleece so special?

Alpaca fleece is extremely fine and soft, almost resembling cashmere.  It has to be felt first hand to be compared to anything.  It is ideally soft for all types of apparel, and usually takes people by surprise when they first put their hands on the back of an alpaca.  Though relatively new to the United States, alpaca fleece goes all the way back to the Incan Empire.  One touch and you'll need no explanation!

2.  What kind of care do Alpacas require?

Generally, Alpacas are very easy to care for.  A diet of hay, grass, and a small amount of alpaca grain each day is usually all that is needed.   One alpaca costs around the same per as having a dog!   Veterinarian care is required, and many vets are now educating themselves to be of better service to the Alpaca community.
Alpacas do very well in cold weather (originally living in the mountains of Peru), and need a simple three sided shed for shelter facing out of the wind.   Though very hot temperatures require them to be watched closely, alpacas are now being successfully raised in all parts of the country.

3.  What is the average price of an alpaca?

Prices can vary widely depending on the quality of animal desired.  An animal purchased at pet quality (or as a companion to other alpacas) can go for $1,000
all the way up to several hundred thousand dollars for the most excellent breeding males and females.

4.  How does a person get started in the Alpaca lifestyle?

Visiting a farm and asking as many questions as you can is a great way to start educating yourself.  Any smart alpaca breeder will welcome the chance to educate newcomers in this amazing lifestyle.   Give us a call today!
